As the holiday season nears, we reflect upon the extraordinary courage of the adult and children survivors who come to us for protection in our Becky’s House® Domestic Violence Programs. Home is not safe for everyone — especially now during the pandemic. Violence and abuse are on the rise behind closed doors of stay at home orders, lost jobs, and school shutdowns. Without access to financial resources or support systems, the path to safely flee is hard to imagine when you don’t know how you would provide for yourself or your children on your own.
Natalie’s Story
Natalie and her young son barely escaped their abuser. Married for eight years, her husband’s increasing abuse was both emotional and physical. When he lost his job this year, the violence escalated and Natalie was trapped at home with him. She couldn’t see her family or friends for help. During the last brutal incident, Natalie’s neighbor heard her screams and called the police. She and her son were taken to the hospital and then referred to our Vi McKinney Becky’s House® Shelter. Natalie knew she could never return home if she wanted to protect her child.
When they arrived at our shelter, Natalie and her son were confused and withdrawn. They began to heal with counseling and ongoing support from our team. As Natalie became stronger, she found part-time work and moved to our transitional housing program. In a safe home at last, her son found comfort and became more confident. Natalie obtained her real estate license and started a training program. She’s now focused on helping her son heal, starting her new career and saving for their own apartment. Natalie knows she will face some challenges, but she is determined to build a better life for her family.
“Thank you for encouraging me when I needed help the most. Everyone at YWCA has been so kind and friendly to me, like a big family. It was your warmth and support that made me slowly walk out of the shadows and restore my confidence. I am happy that we’ve come so far and we can be at peace now.”
Will you join us this holiday season and give brighter futures to survivors like Natalie?
