Creating pathways to safety, healing and transformation

YWCA San Diego County empowers individuals and families to break the cycle of domestic violence and homelessness, and achieve self-sufficiency. We are dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and advocating for peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all people.

For many survivors, the trauma of violence and abuse is compounded by racial inequities, gender biases, social stigmas, cultural expectations, and economic hardships. Through comprehensive and flexible solutions, we aim to lift their voices, dismantle barriers to their health and well-being, and provide resources and opportunities to help them achieve their dreams.

Survivor Centered Solutions

YWCA San Diego County serves all adults and their children — including women, men, trans, and nonbinary people — who are experiencing domestic violence and abuse.

For those without sufficient financial resources or support systems, escaping abuse can be an overwhelming decision leaving them at great risk of unimaginable harm. Our gender-inclusive programs and services are designed to help survivors understand their options and access critical resources at the pace and level that is best for their unique circumstances.

Although we serve all survivors, the majority of our residential clients are young mothers with children, with 85% of households led by women of color. Through crisis interventions, safe housing programs, and advocacy and support services, we are helping survivors heal from trauma, strengthen their family, and build a solid foundation to thrive and pursue their life goals.

1 in 4 women, 1 in 7 men, and 1 in 2 trans and nonbinary people experience severe forms of domestic violence in their lifetimes. Learn more about the prevalence of violence and abuse, interconnected social issues, and the disproportionate impact on people of color and marginalized groups.

A mother needs assistance to escape her abuser and move her children to a stable home. A male survivor has no where to turn for shelter and services. A young adult is fleeing an abusive partner with their cat and needs protection. Meet survivors who came to us for help, regained their independence, and are now on their way to achieving their full potential.

Contributions from individuals, foundations, corporations, and government partners sustain our critical programs and operations. Our four-star rating from Charity Navigator, their highest rating, indicates excellence in governance, accountability, transparency, and fiscal responsibility. HOME IS NOT SAFE FOR EVERYONE

Domestic violence is escalating and likely affects someone you already know. Survivors face increased isolation at home with mounting economic hardship.

Voices of Strength and Courage

“It was so hard to imagine that I could have a different life for my children. For the first time, I’m excited and hopeful about our future.”

Nancy, Survivor and Client

“I was feeling so helpless and alone. You were there for me and my children and treated us like family. Because of YWCA, I’m working now and we’re living in our own home. All of this is because of your help and encouragement. I will always be grateful.”

Lisa, Survivor and Client

“When I was at my lowest point and losing hope, you saved us. You gave me a safe place to stay with my cat and helped me regain my strength. Although I’m still not fully healed, I know that we will be okay.”

Chelsea, Survivor and Client

“I’m grateful for all of the support and guidance you gave me. My children are doing much better now and I know we will keep getting stronger. Thank you for everything.”

Sylvia, Survivor and Client

“I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to take care of my son on my own. Thanks to YWCA, we’re in our own home and getting better every day. I never felt alone because I had so much support from all of you. Thank you for helping us get through this.”

Layla, Survivor and Client

“After years of hidden abuse, I was broken, ashamed, and confused. She had convinced me it was all my fault. YWCA helped me regain my self-worth as a person, and most importantly, as a father. You literally changed my life.”
