Equal. Powerful. Unstoppable.
Sylvia’s Story
Sylvia endured years of verbal and physical abuse and feared for her children's safety. Her husband refused to let her leave the house unless she reported where she was at all times. He always explained that he just wanted to make sure she was safe. She was finally able to escape and came to Becky's House® Emergency Shelter. With great determination, Sylvia overcame significant barriers and began to rebuild her family's future.
Chelsea’s Journey
Chelsea was referred to Becky’s House® Emergency Shelter by a friend. She had been in an abusive marriage for over 12 years and endured the pain silently. Chelsea relied on her cat, Tiger, for emotional support and when the threats escalated to harm her pet, she knew she had to find a way to leave. As soon as they came to YWCA, Chelsea found the support they needed to feel safe as she began the journey to reclaim her life.
Layla’s Journey
Layla's relationship started as attentive care and soon escalated into abusive and violent behavior. After a life-threatening attack, Layla was taken to a hospital where she was referred to YWCA. Layla and her young son found immediate protection and support through our programs. As she started healing and making progress, Layla faced setbacks from the pandemic. She continued to work through her challenges, and with sheer fortitude she was able to reach her goals.
